MacArthur Park, at 64th Street, between Park and Lexington Avenues, is a New York City park, the first public park in the United States. The 61-acre site, which was the first in New York City to be constructed primarily as a park, itself underwent territorial disputes between the police and the City; the park’s intellectual history is linked to early urban anarchist philosophies. The park was named after the Army Air Corps general who died suddenly of a heart attack in 1951, but MacArthur was so hated for his use of the atomic bomb in Japan that City parks commissioner Robert Moses appropriated the name to remove any association with the general. The park officially opened on April 25, 1934.

New York City’s official Skyline Park is at 6th Avenue and 40th Street in Manhattan overlooking the East River. It is an open space park, with the North end of the park’s major green space, the East River Esplanade, covering the former East River Drive, a private park, from West 57th to West 77th Streets. The Esplanade also serves as a boardwalk. The esplanade was formerly part of the proposed East River Drive, which would have connected the Battery to Hell Gate. The park was founded after World War II when the city expropriated the area and sold the land to the city. The park was initially exclusive to the more exclusive areas of Manhattan such as the Upper East Side, but in 1975 a section of the park was opened to the entire public with the opening of the 57th Street Boat Basin.

Washington Heights is also the site of Washington Heights station, which is located at 241st Street and Broadway. It serves the A, C, and E trains as well as two buses for use by local residents. It has four entrances, three of which allow access to the High Road and one that leads to the Henry Hudson Parkway, which connects it to New Jersey. Washington Heights is also home to five public housing developments: The Rivington Houses; the Murray Hill Houses; the Columbia Houses; the Dyckman Houses; and the Fosdick Houses. The Rivington Houses are the only public housing south of 155th Street.
