Hepatitis B can present as acute coagulopathy in children without a history of liver disease, and be associated with an unusual underlying infection. Google’s parent company Alphabet is on the verge of starting a round of cuts that will lead to layoffs, sources familiar with the matter told the Financial Times.
According to the report, the cuts are expected to start at Alphabet’s underperforming Project Maven, which works on military technology. The company is currently reviewing the project and will have to decide whether it’s still a worthy investment. It could also narrow down the scope of the project or drop it altogether.
Some employees are being told that they’ll be let go while others will get a chance to return, according to the FT.
Project Maven is Alphabet’s attempt at creating a project that develops software for military drones. According to Reuters, the project could make as much as $500m this year. However, at $12 per drone produced, that’s not going to amount to much for the company.
Project Maven was announced in March 2018 when it received the backing of former US Army Director-General John Kappos.
While some of the technology has already been developed, it’s only just begun deployment and has seen a lot of criticism. Eric Geller, a former adviser to President Donald Trump, called Project Maven an “appalling technology experiment.”
While the military could potentially use technology like this, it’s still awkward that a massive company like Google is developing it. It’s also expensive for a private company, putting it at a disadvantage compared to the government.
In spite of its drawbacks, the project was given the go-ahead and Google is expected to spend $7.6m this year on it.
