In the early 1970s the Hyderabad film industry was in a slump and Devika Rani of Andhra Pradesh was one of its few shining stars. Having worked in Telugu films, she went into the Hindi film industry in 1974. In 1976, she met Kumar at a function in Hyderabad. He then acted in a legal drama named Aurangzeb and he was seen in the 2009 release Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai. His last release in 2009 was Jaane Na, in which he played a retired, struggling, old-fashioned, orthodox narrator.
On the occasion of the 100th birth anniversary of his father in 2011, he made a special appearance playing the role of Mahendra, a duty-bound and spineless son in the 1986 movie Jis Desh Ki Baatein. Of his 1991 film Silsila, Kumar has said “I was happy to do a good, clean and beautiful film. The work I did, the people I did it with, the directors I did it with became my friends. Now, people say I don’t act. All these things, this is the truth (laughs).”[91]
