Muster Service and Diebold Host Election Day Presentation on Broadway at The First Baptist Church; Birks Jonathan Jackson Presents the World Premiere of “Tribeca.”
This Off-Broadway musical, directed by Ken Roberson and with music by composers Bruce and Sanford Sylvan, is coming to the State Theatre in Albany in a production sponsored by Artistically Alive (a local arts theater program). Roberson wrote the book and co-authored the music and lyrics with Sylvan. “Election Day” also features a first-rate cast of six well-established actors. The cast includes Bill DeVaughn as George Washington, Bille Brown as Martin Van Buren, and Joseph Hanchar as John Adams, and puppeteer Carmen LaRue, who is very familiar to Albany theatergoers. Mike Ames directs.
“Election Day” is a satirical play that tells the story of four presidential candidates who spend the entirety of a long campaign (40 months) hammering their opponents in order to win the White House.
The musical’s book is smartly written and thoughtful, picking up on the variety of current events that were news during the 1790s, including the Whiskey Rebellion, John Quincy Adams’ nomination for the presidency and, of course, slavery. The show features a very clever and catchy song that was written years ago for a Broadway musical about the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy. This off-Broadway production includes music and lyrics by artists Bruce and Sanford Sylvan.
The entire performance is slickly done, the dialogue is sharp, and the cast has wonderful characterization.
At the start of the show, one of the candidates delivers a funny, nasal monologue (played dead-on by DeVaughn). The rest of the cast then steps in, and the dialogue is smart, witty and fast-paced. I’ve seen plenty of political satire, but I was captivated by “Election Day.”
If you saw “Avenue Q” this past season, you may remember the character Sally, whose jokes were funny when she delivered them, but horribly unfunny when they popped up in the background. “Election Day” is like that. The dialogue is sharp, but the jokes (particularly in the first
